RMKS/1. The Thompson-Ravitz Awards for Excellence in Public Affairs 
(PA) recognize the most exceptional performance by individuals and 
units in PA throughout the Navy. The awards bear the names of Rear 
Admiral William Thompson, the first designated Public Affairs 
Officer (PAO) selected for flag rank and the first PAO to be the 
Chief of Information (CHINFO), and Rear Admiral Robert Ravitz, a 
former Director of the Naval Reserve PA Program and Special 
Assistant to the CHINFO.   

2. The recipients of CY 2012 Thompson-Ravitz unit awards are:
a. Community Relations, Shore, Large:  United States Naval Academy 
- "USNA COMREL Program."
b. Community Relations, Shore, Small: USS CONSTITUTION - 
"Constitution's Community Relations Program."
c. Special Events/Projects, Observances and Special Publics, Shore, 
Large: U.S. Fleet Forces Command - "Bold Alligator 2012."  
Honorable Mention: Naval Medical Center San Diego - "Naval Medical 
Center San Diego's Appreciation Day." 
d. Special Events/Projects, Observances and Special Publics, Shore, 
Small: Naval Air Station Jacksonville - "P-8A Poseidon multi-
mission roll out and P-8A Integrated Training Center."
e. Proactive Public Information/Media Relations, Shore, Large:  
Navy Region Mid-Atlantic - "Navy's response to FA-18D Jet Crash." 
Honorable Mention: U.S. Naval Forces Europe-Africa/U.S. SIXTH Fleet
- "Africa Partnership Station 2012. "Honorable Mention: United 
States Naval Academy - "USNA Crisis Communication Plan."
f. Proactive Public Information/Media Relations, Shore, Small:  
Naval Surface Warfare Center, Corona division - "The Navy in NORCO."
g. Internal Communications, Afloat, Large: USS MAKIN ISLAND (LHD 8) 
- "CSADD-Coalition of Sailors Against Destructive Decisions."
h. Internal Communications, Shore, Large: U.S. Navy Bureau of 
Medicine and Surgery - "Bath Salts: It's not a Fad, It's a 
Nightmare."
j. Internal Communications, Shore, Small: Navy Regional Maintenance
Center (Norfolk) - "One RMC Concept - Communications Plan."

3. The "Best in Show" Award is selected from among the unit winners
above. The "Best in Show" honors go to: U.S. Navy Bureau of 
Medicine and Surgery - "Bath Salts: It's not a Fad, It's a 
Nightmare."  

4. The recipients of CY 2012 Thompson-Ravitz individual awards are:
a. Junior Public Affairs Officer of the Year: LT Michael A.  
Hatfield, Navy Public Affairs Support Element Headquarters.
b. Junior Reserve Public Affairs Officer of the Year: LT Michael J.
Sheehan, U.S. Fleet Forces Command.
c. Junior Civilian Public Affairs Officer of the Year:
Mandy McCammon, Naval Special Warfare Command.
d. Enlisted Public Affairs Officer of the Year: MCC(SW/AW) Frank 
E. Neely, USS CONSTITUTION.
