RMKS/1.  THIS NAVADMIN INVITES ALL NAVY COMMANDS AND ORGANIZATIONS TO 
PARTICIPATE IN THE 2014 ALFRED P. SLOAN AWARD.  THE ALFRED P. SLOAN AWARD 
RECOGNIZES ORGANIZATIONS THAT CREATE EFFECTIVE WORKPLACES AND USE FLEXIBILITY 
STRATEGIES TO MAKE WORK "WORK" BETTER
- FOR THE EMPLOYER AND THE EMPLOYEE.  THIS AWARD IS SPONSORED BY WHEN WORK 
WORKS, A JOINT PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN THE FAMILIES AND WORK INSTITUTE (FWI) AND 
THE SOCIETY FOR HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT (SHRM).

2.  WORKPLACE FLEXIBILITY IS A WAY TO ACHIEVE LIFE-WORK BALANCE, A COMPONENT 
OF SECRETARY OF THE NAVY'S 21ST CENTURY SAILOR INITIATIVE.

BENEFITS OF LIFE-WORK BALANCE EFFORTS INCLUDE:
    A.  ATTRACTING HIGH-QUALITY, ELIGIBLE RECRUITS WITH A PROPENSITY TO 
SERVE, WHO WOULD OTHERWISE JOIN ANOTHER DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE ENTITY.
    B.  PREPARING SAILORS AND FAMILIES FOR MILITARY SERVICE.
    C.  RETAINING TOP PERFORMERS.

3.  PAST NAVY WINNERS OF THE ALFRED P. SLOAN AWARD INCLUDE:  RECRUIT TRAINING 
COMMAND, NAVAL AIR WARFARE CENTER TRAINING SYSTEMS DIVISION, FLEET 
INTELLIGENCE TRAINING CENTER, NAVAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING COMMAND, NAVAL 
SUPPORT ACTIVITY HAMPTON ROADS, NAVY MEDICINE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT, NAVY 
OPERATIONAL SUPPORT CENTER (LEMOORE, CA), AND EOD TRAINING AND EVALUATION 
UNIT TWO.

4.  ALL COMMANDS ARE ENCOURAGED TO APPLY.  THE FIRST APPLICATION DEADLINE IS 
FRIDAY, 11 APRIL 2014.  ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON ELIGIBILITY, DEADLINES AND

IS NO COST TO APPLY FOR THE AWARD.

5.  ALL APPLICANTS WILL RECEIVE A FREE BENCHMARKING REPORT ON WORKPLACE 
EFFECTIVENESS AND FLEXIBILITY FROM WHEN WORK WORKS.  THE REPORT WILL COMPARE 
THE NAVY APPLICANT'S SURVEY RESPONSES TO AWARD WINNERS AND HIGHLIGHT 
COMMANDS' STRENGTHS AND POTENTIAL AREAS OF IMPROVEMENT.
